About the Course
Cereal crops, particularly maize, sorghum, and rice, are central to national food security, rural livelihoods, and economic stability in climate-vulnerable countries such as Somalia. However, cereal production systems are increasingly exposed to climate-related risks including recurrent droughts and floods, erratic rainfall patterns, rising temperatures, land degradation, and heightened pest and disease pressure. These challenges are undermining productivity, increasing dependence on imports, and threatening the resilience of smallholder farmers and national food systems.
Traditional cereal production practices are no longer sufficient to respond to these evolving climate risks. There is an urgent need to transition toward Climate-Smart Agriculture (CSA) approaches that simultaneously enhance productivity, build climate resilience, and promote sustainable land and water management. Climate-smart cereal production integrates improved crop varieties, water-efficient irrigation, soil health management, climate risk mitigation, and informed policy planning.
This training is designed to strengthen institutional and technical capacity to plan, implement, and mainstream climate-smart cereal production systems. By adopting a policy-to-practice approach, the programme combines strategic policy discussions, technical capacity building, and field-based learning to support the development of resilient and sustainable food systems.
