Training on Environmental and Social Safeguards
Environmental and Social Safeguards refers to policies, standards and operational procedures designed to identify, avoid, mitigate and minimize adverse environmental and social impacts that may arise in the implementation of development projects. These safeguards are integral to sustainable development and are often mandated by international financial institutions such as the World Bank, International Finance Corporation (IFC), and regional development banks.
The implementation of these safeguards has become increasingly important as the global community recognizes the long-term impacts of development projects on both the environment and society. Poorly managed projects can lead to significant environmental degradation, loss of livelihoods, social unrest, and violations of human rights. To address these challenges, international standards and frameworks have been established, guiding project developers to conduct thorough environmental and social impact assessments (ESIA), engage with stakeholders, and implement comprehensive management plans.
This course is aimed at enhancing the capacity of the participant in the development and implementation of projects that are environmentally and socially sustainable to be able to assess and manage the environmental and social risks and impacts of projects to the community.
