About the Course
Humanitarian and development programmes can expose people to protection risks or unintentionally exclude groups when age, gender, disability, displacement, social status and other factors are not systematically considered. Protection, Gender and Inclusion (PGI) provides a practical framework for analysing differential risks, strengthening safe and meaningful access, improving accountability and ensuring that programme design does not create or reinforce harm.
This 10-day flagship programme develops capability to integrate protection, gender and inclusion across assessment, design, implementation, service delivery, monitoring and coordination. It covers protection risk analysis, intersectionality, disability inclusion, age considerations, safeguarding, accountability to affected populations, referral systems, protection mainstreaming, humanitarian standards, inclusive service design and PGI monitoring.
Participants use realistic programme and emergency scenarios to develop a PGI risk analysis, accessibility and inclusion assessment, referral map, participation plan, safeguarding controls, service-design checklist, PGI indicator framework and institutional roadmap. The programme is particularly suitable for organizations seeking a practical, cross-sector capability rather than separate awareness sessions on protection, gender and disability.
Target Participants
Humanitarian and development professionals; protection and gender specialists; programme managers; social workers; government and NGO personnel; community engagement teams; disability-inclusion practitioners; M&E professionals; safeguarding staff and managers responsible for inclusive service delivery.

Training Approach
The programme uses protection-risk analysis, accessibility audits, participation simulations, safeguarding scenarios and service-design workshops. Participants work with an integrated humanitarian or development case throughout the ten days, allowing them to see how protection, gender and inclusion interact operationally.
A capstone design lab requires teams to redesign a programme for safer, more inclusive delivery and present the resulting PGI framework to a simulated programme steering committee.
Organizational Benefits
- Strengthens inclusive and rights-based programme design.
- Improves identification and mitigation of protection risks.
- Strengthens disability inclusion and accessibility.
- Improves safe community participation and accountability.
- Strengthens safeguarding and referral systems.
- Improves PGI monitoring and management reporting.
- Provides an integrated framework applicable across sectors.
Certification
Participants who successfully complete this course will receive a Certificate of Course Completion from Devimpact Institute, recognizing the knowledge, practical skills and competencies developed through the programme.
Customization Options
This course can be customized and delivered as an in-house programme to address the specific policies, systems, sector context and capacity-development priorities of an organization. The course duration, modules, case studies and practical exercises may be adjusted following a training needs assessment.
